Music is woven in to the very fabric of Nova Scotia life, a strong expression of the province’s unique and vibrant culture.

The province is home to a diverse selection of music. From a performance of the Nova Scotia Symphony Orchestra to a spontaneous gathering of local fiddlers, music is everywhere.

Nova Scotia’s gift for music can be traced back to its founding cultures: Mi’kmaq, Acadia, Celtic, and African. These cultures have preserved their musical traditions remarkably well.

The province has produced a staggering number of international music stars and Nova Scotia’s fertile musical soil attracts talent from around the world. It has become known as a great place to perform, with audiences that are appreciative and enthusiastic.

Some of the best places to hear local and international acts are the many festivals around the province. Nova Scotia is home to a number of multi-stage annual music festivals that appeal to all kinds of music lovers. Halifax is home to the TD Canada Trust Atlantic Jazz Festival and Halifax Pop Explosion, and in Cape Breton you’ll find Celtic Colours International Festival. Folk lovers will delight in Wolfville’s Deep Roots Music Festival, Lunenburg’s Folk Harbour Festival, the Riverfront Music Jubilee in New Glasgow, and the Stan Rogers Folk Festival in Canso.

Beyond these signature events, you’ll find that the province is scattered with other entertainment gems. Some of the unique venues worth checking out include Victorian-style theatres like Cape Breton’s Savoy and Liverpool’s Astor. There are also architecturally modern cultural centres like Th’Yarc in Yarmouth, Pictou’s Decoste Centre, and the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in Halifax. Along with music, you’ll find live theatre, comedy and other acts.

Of course, wherever you are in the province, don’t overlook the local pub, church, or ceilidh. While the province has produced more than its share of famous performers, there are always new ones on the way. So while you’re taking in these smaller performances, you may just find yourself witnessing the next big superstar.
